Fort Worth wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What is a one-way exclusion door?
In a time where many people are seeking humane methods of pest control, as a result of a renewed interest and understanding of nature brought about by the climate crisis, the one-way exclusion door is one of the most popular methods. It is cheap, easy to set up, and reliable. A lot of exclusion doors look rather like cage traps, with a wire mesh exterior. A simple pulley or spring system is involved, at the entrance to the door. Whilst they both usually have the same results, there are two main types of one-way exclusion door.

The first type of one-way exclusion door is set up around a place in your property, shed, or garage where you know a pest is hiding. This usually involves some sort of hole that the pest has dug in order to raise its young or shelter from the elements and other predators. These are usually dug in wood, so watch out for holes in roofs and wooden beams, as well as near the floorboards. Naturally, this method only usually works with rodents that have made their home within your property. The exclusion door ordinarily comes with four metal flaps around its entrance, so that it is portable and can be attached to most surfaces, regardless of shape and size. Once these are fitted around the area in which the pests are residing, when the rodent exits the area, it is able to push through the door and exit your property. However, due to the design of the exclusion door, the animal is no longer able to re-enter the place it has just left. This is one of the most humane ways to remove pests, as the pest is entirely unharmed in the process, but simply cannot return to your property due to the nature of the door. These contraptions can also very easily be turned into traps for relocation. All you need to do is attach another wall, or door, to the outside of your exclusion door.

For larger animals, or when you know you have a pest problem but are not sure where exactly the pests are residing, a slightly different design of the exclusion door must be used. These can either be built into existing doors used by humans or be placed in well-established modes of exit for pests, such as windows. This is a disruptive method to your home environment, so it is usually only used in garages, sheds, or rooms where pests are becoming a chronic problem. It is vital to block all other available exits for the pests so that the only way they can exit your property is via the exclusion door. However, this is sometimes not enough, as pests reside in your property because it is warm and protected. Therefore, they may be reluctant to leave. However, they will need a food source, although this sometimes can be obtained from inside your property if you have an insect problem or leave food lying around near where the pests are residing. If this is the case, remove all potential food sources from the area, so that the pests have no choice but to exit your property in search of food. If your exclusion door is in a place that is hard to spot, you may need to offer the pests extra incentives to use the door, such as food as bait, like peanut butter. Alternatively, you may seek to drive the animals out using a deterrent such as noise, meaning they exit via the door, and are unable to return inside.
